RAYMOND DROOGS DIES
Raymond W. Droogs, 73, died at his home in Kooskia Tuesday
afternoon, June 24. A retired laborer, he had been ill with cancer for two
years.
Droogs worked as a miner, logger, gas station attendant, maintenance supervisor
and construction worker. Two years ago he took up painting as a hobby,
participating in local art shows. Many friends admired his paintings.
Born March 24, 1907, in Rodney, Mich., to William and Ida Droogs, the family
moved to Mount Idaho, near Grangeville, in 1911. He attended school in both
towns.
Droogs served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the 1920's and married Verla Alice
Chase July 9, 1930 at Moscow. He worked in Mullan area mines during the 1930's.
From 1941-1948, he was a maintenance supervisor at Farragut Naval Training
Station near Sandpoint.
In 1949 the couple moved to Ketchikan, Alaska, where he worked in construction
and as a camera operator in a movie theater. Then they returned to Kooskia and
operated a Texaco station in Kamiah in the early 1960's. After that he returned
to mining and logging until retirement in 1967.
Droogs was a member of the Elks and Eagles lodges for more than 30 years.
Survivors include his wife at the family home; two daughters, Carolyn Weeks and
Lois Deal, both of Kooskia; two sons, Larry of Ketchikan and Robert of Kellogg;
two sisters, Myrna Moore of Grangeville and Vera Pemble of Missoula; 15
grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Saturday, June 28, at Prairie View Cemetery in
Grangeville.
Trenary's Funeral Home in Kooskia was in charge of arrangements.
