DIES LONELY DEATH FROM PTOMAINE POISONING

The lifeless body of John Thomas, 28, of Lucile, a sheep herder working for Ralph Hoxie, was found in the trail at the head of sheep Creek, about 12 miles up the mountain from the Little Salmon river opposite the mouth of Rapid river, last Thursday, by Chas. Hall, of Riggins.  Thomas had been missing since last Tuesday when Mr. Hoxie made his weekly visit to the sheep camp with supplies and had been unable to located the herder or the band of sheep.  Search made by Hoxie resulted in the finding of the sheep but not the herder.

Mr. Hall had been at his own sheep camp in the same vicinity and was returning home when he discovered the body.  He rode immediately to the nearest telephone, and notified authorities.  Friday, Joe Eller, jailer and Geo. Trenary, coroner, made a trip on horseback from Riggins to the scene.  After examination of the body, it was concluded by the coroner that the dead man had been a victim of ptomaine poisoning, and had been dead since the first of the week.  Evidently he had been taken sick and had struggled to the trail, hoping that he would be discovered and receive help, and had died on the trail.

The body was brought by pack horse to Lucile for burial.
