DEAD BODY FOUND

Twenty Miles Above the Mouth of the South Fork of Salmon River - In Camp on Salmon River   June 21, 1890

Editor Free Press -

I wish to state that while prospecting on Salmon River on 13 isnt.?  15 miles above the mouth of the South Fork, I found the body of a drowned man partly in and partly out of the water.  Being alone and not having any tools I was unable to remove it from the river but on reaching camp the following day I informed A.J. Steeves and Patrick Brennan, placer miners, who on the 15th went to the place and buried it.  The corpse had evidently been in the water since last fall, was about 5 feet 8 inches in height, and had nothing on but a small piece of shirt of striped cotton material and a pair of new shoes with seamless vamps of finer quality than those usually wore by prospectors.  Credit should be given to A.J. Steeves and Patrick Brennan for the humanity shown in traveling several miles over a very rough country in order to perform the last offices for the dead.  They left a suitable description on a piece of drift lumber over the grave.
