MOTHER LAID TO REST
WEDNESDAY Idaho
County lost one of its Gold Star mothers this week with the death of ELIZABETH
E. WATKINS who passed away at her home in Grangeville Sunday, January 28, at
the age of 79 years. Elizabeth Long was born in Cleveland, Ohio, October 9,
1860, and came to Idaho in 1909 from Michigan where she had made her home since
a small girl. She was married to George
Watkins in 1888 at Big Rapids, Michigan, and the couple came to Idaho in 1909
and have made their home in Mt. Idaho and Grangeville ever since, except for one
year spent in California with their daughter and son-in-law in Richmond. One son by a former
marriage, William I. Droogs, was drowned when the Tuscania was sunk in 1917. The
wife passed away soon after (tuberculosis) leaving three children, Mryna, Vera,
and Raymond, who were then take into the Watkins home and raised as their own.
These three grandchildren, now Mrs. Albert Moore of Grangeville, Mrs. Vera
Pemble of Wallace, and Raymond Droogs of Mullan, were here for the funeral, the
latter two arriving Tuesday evening. Mrs. Vera M. Johnson, the
daughter from California, arrived a few days prior to the death of her mother.
Others at home are the husband, George Watkins, and son and his wife, Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Watkins. Mrs. Watkins leaves 15 grandchildren and 15
great-grandchildren; two brothers, George Long of Detroit, Mich., and Will Long
of Cadillac, Michigan. Funeral services were held
Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Ailor Mortuary with the Rev. Nelson C.
Pierce officiating. Interment was at Prairie View Cemetery. Submitted
