January 30, 1947 GEORGE WATKINS TO BE BURIED
HERE TODAY The
body of George Watkins who died January 26, of infirmities at the home of
his daughter, Mrs. Thurman Johnson, in Richmond, Ca., arrived here Wednesday for
burial. Mr. Watkins was born
September 29, 1863 at Finley, Ohio. In July 1890, he was married to Elizabeth
Long at Big Rapids, Michigan. He had been a resident of Idaho county for 30
years and was a veteran member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, joining in this city in
1912, and still retained membership at the time of his death. For a number of
years, he served as trustee of the lodge. Mrs. Watkins passed away January 28,
1940, at Grangeville. Mr. Watkins was a
carpenter by trade and for many years drove, with horse and buggy, back and
forth from their home in Mt. Idaho to Grangeville, to work. Later they bought a
home on North Junction here, which he still owned. He has been living, since his
wife's death, with his daughter in California, but as long as his health
permitted, he made an annual trip back to Grangeville to visit old friends. Mrs. Johnson came Wednesday
on the train, and a son, Charles Watkins, arrived on the afternoon bus from
Butte, Montana. Other survivors are three grandchildren, which the Watkins
raised, Mrs. Alfred Moore of Mt. Idaho; Raymond Droogs of Sandpoint, and Mrs.
Vera Pemble. There is another grandchild, Virginia Lee Watkins and also several
others in the east.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon (Thursday) at 2 o'clock from the
Ailor Chapel with the Rev. Harold Black, of the Federated Church, officiating.
Interment will be in Prairie View Cemetery.
