Primary Teacher Here Many Years Dies At Colfax
Funeral services for Mrs. Verdie Dialtha White, who passed
away May 31 at the Brant and Weisman Clinic in Colfax following a brief illness,
were held Sunday at the Browning Funeral Home, Colfax. The Rev. Earl Shoup of
Pullman was the officiant and burial was in the Pullman cemetery.
Mrs. White was born in Endicott, Wash., Feb. 11, 1887, the daughter of early
Whitman county pioneers and it was there she spent her early years moving with
the family to Pullman when nine years old and to Spokane when 11 years of age.
In 1906 she graduated from Spokane Lewis & Clark high school. She later
attended the Washington State college in Pullman and Lewiston Normal school.
By substituting for a teacher who was ill in Endicott she began her life work.
From that time on for 35 years she served faithfully and conscientiously as a
teacher of the primary grades teaching in Riparia and Endicott Wash., Wallowa,
Ore., and in Kendrick and Grangeville, Idaho. She completed her 17th consecutive
years in Grangeville just 13 days before her death.
On June 17, 1918 she was married to Drayton Ross White, superintendent of the
Kendrick schools. He passed away in Colfax on Sept. 28, 1935.
Mrs. White was a member of the Methodist church and throughout many years was
active in the various departments of the church and Sunday school work. She was
a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Colfax, Rebekah lodge, Colfax and
the PEO sisterhood in Grangeville.
She is survived by Mr. White's daughter, Shirley, now Mrs. John Brush, and by
the grandson, Barrett Barclay Brush, of Tacoma; by two brothers, James
Wellington Person of Curlew, Wash., and Carl W. Person of Salem, Ore.; two
sisters, Mrs. D.W. Henry of Endicott and Mrs. Jessie Keller of Seattle, also 10
nephews and eight nieces.
Six local high school boys whom Mrs. White had started in the first grade in
school acted as honorary pallbearers at the services. They were Dean Basinger,
James Martin, Al Wagner Jr., Arley Weaver, Stewart Ailor and John Asker Jr.
Others attending the services here were Supt. and Mrs. R.W. Pratt, Mrs. Ralph
Long, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Vopat, Mrs. L.E. Jordan, Miss Lena Martin, Mrs. Olive
Bartlett, Mrs. M.L. Ayers, Mrs. Thelma Jones, Mrs. John Hans, Mrs. George
Broughman, Mrs. Edgar Chase, Mrs. Claude Northway and John Spencer
