He served in the US Army and received a war pension. I have no other record of his service at this time other that he completed basic training. I have a picture of him in his Army Uniform. FOSS, HENRY T. ~ Born 1 Dec 1888, died 9 Apr 1982, buried 14 Apr 1982 in the Pioneer Cemetery, Horseshoe Bend. PFC in Co. I, 167th Inf. Regt., 42nd (Rainbow) Div. He saw combat in the following campaigns: Champagne-Marne, Aisne-Marne, St. Mihiel, Muese-Argonne and the Defensive Sector. He survived the war without being wounded. He was also on occupation duty in Germany until 12 May 1919. Prior to WW I he saw service on the Mexican border from July to December 1916 with Co. I, 2nd. Idaho Inf. Regt. Submitted by Omer L. WERRY, ELLWOOD ROBERTS ~ Pvt. US Army He did not see overseas duty ... he was drafted while attending the U of I, Mining Engineering School. He was assigned to the Army Specialized Training Command. The war ended a few days before he was to ship out for artillery training. Born July 13, 1899 (some records show July 12, 1898) Died Aug 15 2003. My Father Ellwood R. Werry was probably the oldest WW I veteran in the state of Idaho when he died. He may have been the last WW I vet. To the best of our knowledge he was the oldest living alumni of the University of Idaho. Age 104 yrs, 1 month and 2 days. Submitted by family. [Blaine County]
WERRY, SAMUEL THOMAS ~ Private First Class Samuel T. Werry Born Jan 12, 1890 Killed in Action on November 3, l918, in Belgium with Co. B, 347th Machine Gun Bn, 91st Division, US Army. Age 28 yrs, 9 months and 21 days. Sam was killed shortly, within hours, of the notice of cease fire. He was guarding a bridge when he was apparently killed by sniper. As a boy I was told that Sam and his no. 2 machine gunner had heard a rumor that a cease fire was to be set. The number 2 gunner went back to company lines to find out if was true and it was. He went back to their position and found Sam dead. Sam was the last man who lost his life from Blaine County Idaho in WW I. [Blaine County]
