Kamiah

Kamiah is located in the Clearwater River valley and is rich in heritage of the Nez Perce Nation.  It was here that Lewis and Clark camped during the spring of 1806.  The name Kamiah reputedly comes from the Nez Perce word for "hemp: which is named "kama" in their language.  Some arrowheads and other artifacts can still be found in the area.  Nez Perce tribal celebrations include the Root Festival and Chief Lookingglass Days in Kamiah, and the Talmaks encampment in late June near Mason Butte.  Visitors are welcome.

Today the Clearwater provides scenic beauty along with the challenge of fishing for steelhead, salmon, trout and small mouth bass.  Each June jet boats race from Lewiston to Kamiah and back.

Kamiah with 1400 population is now the largest town in the county.  Sawmills, pole yards and other forest-related enterprises show that the town is still supported by the timber industry.  Kamiah celebrates the beginning of summer with a rodeo in June and ends the summer with its annual free Bar-B-Que that includes a parade and lots of entertainment.

The community has a large number of activities taking place all during the year that are of interest to tourists.  The Chamber of Commerce keeps an up-to-date calendar of events and can be reached by calling (208) 935-2290.
