Carl Clayton Kitchen Jr. (1922-1997)
Funeral services for Carl Clayton Kitchen Jr., 74, of Emmett who died Monday at an Emmett care center, will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov.7, at the Potter Funeral Chapel in Emmett. Pastor Tim Koah will officiate. Private burial will follow at the Yellow Pine Pioneer Cemetery in Yellow Pine.
Carl was born on Dec. 25, 1922, at Cascade, Idaho. He moved with his family to Boise in 1925. He attended the Boise Jr. College, then moved to Alaska where he delivered mail on dog sled to railroad construction workers. He joined the U.S. Army and served in the Air Corp in Italy, where he flew on 20 missions as a tail gunner. He married Willie Pearl Bennett on June 2, 1945 at Boise. Following his discharge, he returned to the University of Idaho, and graduated. Later he received his masters degree from the College of Idaho. He taught school in Parma, Homedale and later was Principal at Roswell. They moved to Concord, Calif. in 1957, where he taught school until 1970. In the summer months he operated Chuckwagon Trips, a summer camp for youth to experience the wilderness. He also worked for the Forest Service in different capacities for many years. In 1974, Mrs. Kitchen died.
Carl returned to Cascade in 1974. He operated the Cascade Hotel, and the Roxie Theater in Cascade. He married Muriel Edith Russell on Jan. 27, 1979, at Donnelly. They moved to Yellow Pine in 1981. Later they moved to Weiser, and in 1990 to McCall. In 1993, they moved to Emmett. Carl enjoyed fishing, oil painting, fly fishing, gardening, raising flowers, and making rugs. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, Lions Club, a life member of the V.F.W. and MDUDEA Educational Assoc. in California.
Carl is survived by his wife, Muriel Edith Kitchen of Emmett, three sons, Carl Clayton Kitchen III of Boise, Kirt Kitchen of Yellow Pine, and Joe Kitchen of South Carolina; two sisters, Helen Branson of Boise, and Frances Brittain of Brawley, Calif.; two grand-children; two stepchildren, Bryan Lawson of Africa, and June Henderson of Boulder City, Nev.; five step-grandchildren; one great stepgrandchild. He was preceded in death by a daughter. Friends may call today, Thursday, from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Chapel.
