Ruth Schiorring Bennett, 90, formerly of Donnelly, died in Boise on Nov. 29, 2011 of complications from pneumonia.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in McCall.
She was born in Arlington, Mass., to Carl and Elisabeth Schiorring on March 3, 1921. After high school,
Ruth attended nurse’s training, graduating from Melrose Hospital in Melrose, Mass.
In 1941, she married George A. Bennett, a career Air Force military officer and pilot. Together they had five children, Deborah, George Roy, Barbara, Melissa and Mark.
George’s career required the family to move every three to four years. As a military wife, Ruth loved to entertain and host dinner parties.
While living in New York, she once entertained Dwight Eisenhower. Their travels included a four-year station in Germany where the family was able to travel throughout Europe.
Ruth was a loving mother who gave her young children memorably creative birthday parties. She instilled the importance and love of family in her children.
She loved to play bridge and solitaire, enjoyed classical music, and was an avid reader. She passed these interests on to her children.
When George retired from the Air Force, the family moved to a ranch outside Donnelly, where Ruth managed an active cattle operation.
Ruth returned to nursing at McCall Memorial Hospital, starting as a staff nurse and ending her career as director of nursing. She specialized in obstetrics.
It gave her great pleasure to encounter people she had delivered as babies years ago, and to meet them as adults with children of their own.
After retirement Ruth served on the hospital board and remained active in the Episcopal church. She became a master gardener, growing an English garden people came from miles around to see.
Ruth was preceded in death by her son, Mark. She is survived by four of her children, Deborah Bennett of Pleasanton, Calif., George Roy Bennett of North Pole, Alaska, Barbara (Robert) Krogh of Boise and Melissa Bennett of Colville, Wash.
She is also survived by three grandchildren, Jesse (Telesha) Bennett, Angel Mae (Ron) Durham, and Jerry Kincaid; and two great-grandchildren, Jalijah and Taelahna Bennett. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
