Clayton H. Lee of Placentia, Calif., formerly of Donnelly, passed away Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, at the age of 90.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m., at the Placentia Presbyterian Church.
Clayton was born in 1921 in Crookston, Minn.. He attended Moorhead State University, played on the tennis team all four years and became the number one singles player.
He was the City Tennis Champion in Crookston and also in Grand Forks, N.D., while doing graduate work at the University of North Dakota.
Clayton enlisted in the United States Army in 1943 after the attack on Pearl Harbor and served in New Guinea and the Philippines.
After the war, he finished college and went to work as a teacher in Washington state where he met his wife, Guen. They soon moved to Southern California where he was an administrator at several schools in the Placentia-Yorba Linda School district, including Bradford, Wagner, Glenknoll and Golden Elementary Schools.
In order to help support his growing family, he became a drummer in a Dixieland jazz band and performed at parties and events on the weekends. He retired from his job as an educator in 1980.
During retirement, Clayton became a United States Tennis Association umpire and officiated at many tournaments at the college and professional level.
He and his wife also enjoyed traveling, golf, tennis, singing in their church choir and spending summers at their mountain cabin in Donnelly.
He was a driving force behind the financing and refurbishment of the Donnelly city tennis courts and worked as an umpire in the McCall Recreational Softball league.
Clayton is survived by his wife of 61 years; his daughter, Pamela Cedercreutz of Piedmont, Calif.; son-in-law, Mons Cedercreutz; grandchildren, Christina and Jonathan Cedercreutz and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Nancy Halsig of Killeen, Texas, and brother, Elroy Lee of Omaha, Neb.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Donnelly Bible Church in memory of Clayton H. Lee.
