Edna Ingrid (Heikkila) Maki, 91, of Horseshoe Bend, formerly of McCall, passed away at home on Nov. 15, 2011.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at the Finnish Church on Farm to Market Road, Lake Fork under the direction of the Heikkila Funeral Chapel.
A memorial service at Grace Lutheran Church in Horseshoe Bend will be scheduled at a later date to celebrate Edna’s life.
Edna was born on May 8, 1920 at home to Peter and Liisa Heikkila at the Homestead Ranch on Farm to Market Road in McCall.
She joined five surviving older brothers, including her twin brother Rayno. Edna, along with her brother Ray moved to Donnelly to attend and complete their high school education. During World War II, Mom moved to Richmond, Calif., working as “Rosie the Riveter” for the war effort.
Mom and Dad (Edwin) were the first couple married at the Finnish Church, and they were united on Sept. 8, 1946. They raised a daughter, Ilona Mantay (1947) and a son, Allan (1951).
After the children were raised, mom worked at Flannigan Store in Emmett and later as a Reading Assistant at the Horseshoe Bend School.
Mom and Dad enjoyed traveling to Finland, Canada and many of the United States. They were able to spend 23 years wintering as “snowbirds” in Florence, Ariz., where Mom and Dad made lasting friendships.
Other activities as a couple included picking huckleberries, taking Saturday Sauna within the Finnish Community and spending summers at the trailer-cabin in Donnelly.
Both Mom and Dad were very active in the Emmett Eastern Star and were founding members of Grace Lutheran Church in Horseshoe Bend, which recently celebrated 50 years.
They remained a frugal couple throughout their years together, accomplishing much and tithing often. Edna is the last of the Peter and Liisa Heikkila children, a Finnish family that homesteaded in McCall, having been preceded by her parents and brothers, Neilo, George, Vernon, Martin and Rayno, and her infant sister, Elsie.
Edna is survived by her husband of 66 years, Edwin; a daughter, Ilona Mantay; a son, Allan (Elaine) Maki; granddaughters, Myja and Anna Maki, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family suggests donations of your choice in remembrance of Mom, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to all the care givers and Horizon Hospice
