Henry M. Shank died on Dec. 28, 2011 at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Boise.
At Hank’s request there will be no funeral. A gathering will be held on Feb. 25, 2012, at 2:30 p.m. in St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church Fireside Room with the Rev. Bill Brown officiating.
Hank was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Nov. 3, 1922, to Henry M. and Ruthie Woods Shank.
Hank graduated from Ogden High School in 1941. He attended Weber College for one year before enlisting in the U.S. Navy, where he served as radio operator on the USS Missoula.
He served during the campaign of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was discharged in March, 1946 and immediately re-entered college at Weber.
Hank married Jean de Goede on Sept. 1, 1946. He enrolled at the University of Montana in Missoula that fall and received his bachelor of science degree in forestry in June of 1949.
He was a smokejumper in Missoula during the summers of his college years. He started his career as a Forester in Salt Lake City, was transferred to Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Panguitch, Utah and finished his career in McCall, retiring in 1983.
Hank was preceded in death by his son, Henry Michael Shank, in 1958, and his parents, and Beryl and Lynn Cornish. He is survived by his wife Jean, son Joel, daughter-in-law Jeannie Shank and his half-sister, Carol Shank Overton.
Jean, Jeannie and Joel want to thank the staff at St. Luke’s for their extraordinary care and kindness. They also want to thank the Rev. Bill Brown for his presence, concern and wise counsel for Hank and his family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 1045, McCall, ID 83638.
