Margaret Josephine Brown Davies, ”Muggs,” 93, of McCall, passed away on Jan. 10, 2011 at her home on the lake near McCall of age-related causes.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, McCall, on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at 1 p.m.
She was born to Carl and Ida Brown on May 29, 1917 in McCall. In the early years, Carl made a living by driving a wagon team between McCall, the mining town of Warren, and the Salmon River backcountry. The Browns later started and operated Brown Tie and Lumber Company.
Muggs attended school in McCall through the 11th grade. She then graduated from Nampa High School in 1935 and from the University of Idaho in 1939. She married Homer Davies that same year.
Following World War II, Homer and Muggs moved back to Nampa and over time they bought Davies Hardware from Homer’s father.
In 1965 they sold the hardware store, and Homer went to work for the Small Business Administration. SBA took them to Alaska, Seattle, San Francisco, American Samoa, and Spokane.
The couple retired to their home in McCall in 1979. Homer passed away in 2005. Muggs spent a large part of the last five years in Clarkston, Wash., living at Evergreen Estates near her son, Dick, and daughter, Debbie, who reside in Lewiston.
Muggs was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority at the University of Idaho, Eastern Star, Vandal Boosters, P.E.O. and the Episcopal Church of McCall.
Muggs had deep roots in McCall and loved the lake. As a teenager, she life-guarded for several summers and one year swam across the lake. In addition to her own children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she loved all babies and young children. In the summer, she was dedicated to the pursuit of the wild huckleberry.
Muggs is survived by her six children and their spouses: Dick and Sally Davies of Lewiston; Phil and Sally Davies of Medford, Ore.; Don and Gloria Davies of Nampa; Sharon Davies and Terry Reid of Ketchum and Maui; Debbie and Roberto Wagner of Lewiston; and Diane Davies and Alec White of Seattle. She had 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
Our family would like to express our love and gratitude to our cousins, Paul and Amy Pemberton of McCall, our extended family, and Ron and Linda Crockett of Stites for their friendship and many kindnesses to Homer and Muggs over the years.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Hospice of McCall or the McCall chapter of P.E.O. Services are under the direction of Heikkila Funeral Chapel, McCall.
