Hazel Iris Hackler, 94, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010.
A graveside service will be held at Holmes Cemetery on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at 2 p.m. Pastor Tom Penry will be officiating.
There will be a dinner for family and friends following the service at the Donnelly Bible Church.
Hazel was born in Lebanon, Ore. on Sept. 17, 1916 to G. Mervyn Loomis and Nora Kinder, the second of four children. The family moved to Idaho in 1918, homesteading in Paddy Flat.
Hazel and her elder brother, Elton, walked daily from there to Roseberry where they attended school and helped with the chores at their grandparent’s farm. She graduated from Roseberry High School in 1934.
She married William James “Bill” Withers on March 21, 1934. They spent the first years of their marriage living at the Curtis place east of Roseberry, working in the backcountry, logging and mining. They had one son, James Jesse Withers, born in Cascade on March 10, 1941.
The Curtis place burned in 1945, so they purchased the ranch on Gold Fork, where they worked and resided until they moved to Cascade in 1963.
They became employed by Valley County as the custodians at the courthouse. She worked for Valley County in various other positions over the years, including Justice of the Peace and Matron of the Jail until her retirement in 1980.
Bill passed away on March 21, 1969. She married Wayne Hackler on May 22, 1970. He passed away on Jan. 10, 1977.
She was completely devoted to the Lord and very active in the church from teaching Bible School to serving on the board. She was instrumental in her grandchildren and great grandchildren coming to know the Lord.
She enjoyed outdoor activities, including fishing, hunting, berry picking, and especially cutting firewood. She was always messing with firewood, cutting, splitting and hauling it to her house.
She heated her house with an old wood cook stove, which was always glowing red hot, keeping the house about 90 degrees at all times. She was always baking something for someone in that old stove. Rarely could you go to her house that she hadn’t just baked, was baking or preparing to bake something.
She was quite the homemaker and taught anyone that wanted to learn how to bake. She also loved embroidery and spent many hours making beautiful pillow cases, dish towels and table cloths.
She was preceded in death by her husband, mother, father and elder brother, Elton Loomis. She is survived by a sister, Rachel Stone; a brother, Myron Loomis; her son, Jess Withers and his wife, Jan; three grandchildren, Beth Ritch, Diann Jenson and Bill Withers; seven great-grandchildren, Roger Ritch, Allyssa Kennedy, Amanda Ritch, Charles Haley, Nathan Haley, Ella Eld and Jessy Withers; and three great-great-grandchildren, Carson June, James June and Xoe Haley.
