Arlow Dean Bennett passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012.
Viewing will be Thursday Dec. 13, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Calvary Chapel, 123 Auto Drive, Boise. Funeral to follow at 11 a.m.
Visitation and refreshments with friends and family will be held immediately following the service.
He will be laid to rest Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at the Finnish Cemetery in McCall around 11 a.m.
Arlow was born June 18, 1930 in Pocatello. He was the youngest of three siblings. Born and raised in Pocatello, graduating from Pocatello High School in 1948.
He was proud to say he was a “Native Born Idahoan.” He started working at the early age of 12 to support his mother and pay for his own clothes and school supplies.
In 1950 he married RaDene Morris McGowan, having three children, Kit, Sue, and Dean. They later divorced.
On Aug. 7, 1978 he married Janeen Heikkola Barrett with her two children, Tana and Matt.
Arlow began his career as a rookie with the Pocatello Fire Department in 1956. He obtained advancement to battalion chief in 1968 until his retirement in 1986.
Through the years he built strong bonds of friendship, and loyalty with his fellow firefighters. One of the many talents Arlow possessed was the gift of carpentry.
On his days off from the fire department he would spend his hours building homes or helping family and friends with their remodeling projects. After retiring he enjoyed traveling in his fifth-wheel trailer with his wife, Janeen, spending many winters as snow birds in Arizona.
They enjoyed square dancing and spending time with friends soaking up the Arizona sun. As well as traveling around the United States, they also visited Australia, Germany, and New Zealand. “Any place that is warm” was his favorite saying.
Arlow was blessed to have nine grandchildren. There were many road trips traveling to see the latest new member of the family. Many birthday celebrations turned into family reunions.
He loved spending time with family, reading or telling them one of his many stories. He truly treasured all the memories that came with each and every one of his children and grandchildren. We will deeply miss him, his laugh, his humor, and his love.
He is survived by his wife Janeen Bennett of Boise; daughter Kit and Dennis Breneman of Blackfoot and grandsons Avery and Ryan Breneman; daughter Sue and Glenn Gross of Shingle Springs, Calif., and granddaughters Meghan and Madeline and grandson Spencer; son Dean Bennett of Sacramento, Calif., and grandson Ethan; daughter Tana and Rob Elsethagen of Eagle, and granddaughters Abby and Lily; and son Matt and Kozzette Bennett of Boise and grandson Matt Jr.
He was preceded in death by his father, Orville P. Bennett; his, mother Louise Swartz Bennett; a sister, Vena Faye Bennett; and a granddaughter, Madeline Paige Gross.
