Leonard E. Werner, 90, of Cambridge, died of complications related to Parkinson’s disease on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012 at The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society - Moscow Village, Moscow.
A public graveside service will be held at Cambridge Cemetery in Cambridge on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012, at noon officiated by Pastor Steve Penner.
The family requests that flowers, condolences, and, if you knew Leonard and his fabulous sense of humor, please send humorous stories either told by Leonard or about Leonard to be shared at the service, to Thomason Funeral Home, 221 E. Court St., Weiser, ID 83672.
Leonard was born Nov. 3, 1921, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a good man, a loving husband for 61 years, and a terrific father and grandfather sharing tidbits of wisdom through metaphor and brilliant philosophical arrangements.
Leonard was a World War II veteran serving in the Navy who worked as a serviceman for the government for 35 years as a welder by trade.
Leonard was a master gardener growing delicate flowers, delicious tomatoes, and delightful fruit trees. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping although in his later years preferred to shoot his prey with a 35mm camera.
Leonard had an uncanny wit and impeccable sense of humor that bubbled to the service until his dying breath. He was a cartoonist of real and political subject matter.
Leonard was also a knife and tomahawk maker, and blacksmith, able to build a gun completely, from carving the stock to building the trigger.
Leonard was a Mountain Man Rendezvous enthusiast and held national honors as a knife and tomahawk thrower, percussion and flintlock pistol and rifle target shooter. He was inducted into the International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame on Sept. 4, 2004 as recipient of the Pioneer Award.
Leonard was lucky to have lived such a full and adventuresome life, guided by his own rules, with a free spirit and a happy heart. He will be missed!
Leonard was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Merry E. Werner.
He is survived by his brother, Glen Werner, of Murray, Utah; his four daughters, Leone Riedel of Marina del Ray, Calif., Sherry Werner, Randi Shaydak and Mark Veltrop of McCall,and Shelly Werner and Jeff Bond, of Moscow; plus five grandchildren, Stephen Colt and Winter Martindale, Alexia Papadakis, Alysia Ann and Ted Petersen, Che and Meghan Shaydak, and Merry Shaydak; plus several adored great-grandchildren.
Leonard was blessed to have the love and support of family plus the aid of devoted, caring team of workers of Good Samaritan Society during his time of transition.
